Pumpkin seeds for prostate symptoms? An article appearing on PubMed points to a clinical trial that showed improvements in urinary symptoms such as weak stream or frequent urination following 12 months of pumpkin seed supplementation versus placebo in men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
Added to that, justvitamins co. uk point to a 2014 study in Urology International that found that “men with BPH who took 320 mg of pumpkin seed oil daily for six months experienced significant improvements in urinary function compared to a placebo group.”
The site also adds, “A 2009 study in Phytotherapy Research also reported that pumpkin seed oil improved urinary flow and reduced symptoms in men with mild-to-moderate BPH. The oil’s high content of phytosterols and zinc may contribute to hormonal balance and prostate health.”
If you’ve been diagnosed with BPH, a small handful of pumpkin seeds a couple of times a day are an easy add to your diet as one of several recommended ways to manage symptoms, like overall diet, exercise and medical supervision.
Some prefer to add pumpkin seeds to yoghurt or salads as a way of ingesting them. I also include a teaspoon or two of pumpkin seed oil to my diet as part of symptom management.
It should be noted that pumpkin seeds and/or their oils are best used as part of a broader health strategy and shouldn’t be looked upon as a sole therapy.
